Playground Initiatives

School Playgrounds Our first playground project, in the village of Berceni, was completed in 2006. This was the first fully equipped playground built according to European safety regulations in any rural area in Romania, and provides a physical outlet for over 500 children. In 2008, Second Chance took on the challenge of building a second playground in Catunu, which has only one old, rundown elementary school. On a sunny day in June, a team of villagers came out with their tools, and with supplies purchased by Second Chance, built a new playground. We were delighted to see the spirit of volunteerism among the residents. The village now has a safe and child-friendly playground on the school premises, where children come with their parents, who can socialize with each other, using the two benches that were placed there for this purpose.

In 2009, two additional playgrounds were built in Corlatesti and Moara Noua. Both playgrounds were built jointly by Second Chance volunteers and the students, teachers, and residents of the two villages. An additional playground is scheduled for construction in Dambu in 2010.
